Thursday Thirteen
Tonight is opening night for Children of Eden. It’s been 2 very, VERY long months of rehearsal…3, or 4, or 5, sometimes 6 nights a week. It’s really been grueling, but is totally worth once it comes to actually performing the show. With all of my moaning and complaining, I really do live theatre. There’s nothing like it.
By the end of each performance, I will have had approximately 1.5 gabillion words come out of my mouth…O.K. Only 2836 (yes, I counted). Some of that is for songs, some of it is dialog. Multiply that by 4 performances and you have one tired set of vocal chords.
Memorizing it was tough, but for me, the hardest lines to learn are ones that are only one word. One stupid little word that I have to remember to say in the middle of someone else’s lines. I have 22 separate lines that are only one word. Here is some of that excitement, and the emotion I’m (hopefully portraying)…
- Father! (excited)
- No. (answering my own question)
- Abel! (screaming, ’cause he’s, you know, DEAD.)
- Cain! (screaming, ’cause he’s, you know, getting ready to kill Abel)
- Adam! (angry, ’cause he’ just slapped Cain)
- Adam! (disbelieving ’cause he lied to me)
- Adam…(disappointed ’cause he’s scared)
- Cain…(warning, ’cause he won’t let the issue drop)
- Go? (not understanding that I have to leave the garden)
- Wait! (trying to stop Adam)
- Where? (wondering what the answer is)
- Oh. (Bored with Adam’s desire to make a list of bugs)
- When? (wondering what the answer is)

One word “lines” are often the one that will throw you off

Good Luck with your show! I can’t even recall my license plate number much less line after line of a script. I am impressed. Happy TT!
Sounds like a labor of love. Have fun and a wonderful TT too.
Break a leg! I love live theater, too, but found I’m much happier doing crew than being in the spotlight. Weird. I like being in the spotlight.
Hope everything goes well. Happy TT!
break a leg!! not really…you know what i mean though…even though you don’t know me!!
good luck!
Funny. How did opening night go?
I would imagine that one word lines would actually be quite difficult. Hope it goes well.
KT opens tonight. Maybe. With this weather, I’m not sure if it’ll still go on. Sorta hope not b/c we live so far out. Snow is falling fast and furious here and blowing like KA-RAZY!
I hope I’m not too late in wish you Good luck! I really admire you for doing that…I don’t think I would be able too!
